Claire awoke slowly to the sound of her phone ringing. She picked it up, saw an unfamiliar number, and went back to sleep. It rang again and she answered it angrily.

Commander Reese was on the other end and he was agitated. He said, “I’m sending reinforcements to your location. I thought I could trust you but apparently you’re a loose cannon and I can’t have XT3 out in the world, unsupervised.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about what you did last night. You took XT3 to a bar and you got drunk.”

“I wasn’t drunk. How do you know all of this?”

“I have my sources. Hold your position. My men will be with you shortly.”

“I don’t need more men. They’ll just slow me down.”

“I require more men for this mission. You are cracking under the pressure and the stakes are too high for me to allow that.”

“Jesus Christ!”

“That’s what I said when I found out you snuck off to the bar last night with our cloned friend. What were you thinking?”

She sat up now and cleared her throat. “He was under full control. I didn’t see it as a risk.”

“Well, from what I heard, he lost control.”

“You’re right. But I have a true lead now, sir. I can’t be slowed down by reinforcements. It was a minor lapse in judgment on my part and it won’t happen again.”

“It shouldn’t have happened in the first place. You’re better than that. I was shocked to hear about it. Now hold tight. My men will be there soon. I hope you can hold it together until the job is done or I’ll have no choice but to replace you.”

“Bullshit! I was put on this task force to fail and now that I’m making progress, you want to let someone else take the glory? Forget it. You’ll have to remove me yourself.”

“I’ve already taken the first step in that direction, Claire. You see that, don’t you? You are now under my full scrutiny. I’ll be receiving updates from my men about your progress. I hope they have good news to report back to me.”

She hung up in disgust. But once she calmed down she understood that Reese wasn’t one of those upper brass assholes responsible for punishing her with a doomed mission. No, he was the opposite. He wanted her to succeed. He had been working towards a solution even when the rest of the military had given up. He was a kindred spirit, albeit a hard ass to deal with. And he wasn’t wrong. She had gone off mission and done something foolish and detrimental to the mission. She deserved to be punished for it, but he wasn’t punishing her. He was ensuring she obtained results. She shook her head, embarrassed and ashamed of herself. Then she regained her composure and stood.

XT3 was already propped up in his single bed, staring at her out of the corner of his eye. He said, “If they send extra men, it’ll slow you down.”

“You were eaves dropping?”

“I hear better than you do.
